Regular Exercise as a Moderator of the Relationship between Illness-Stress and Depression
Lee Sung-Eun

Abstract
This study examined how regular exercise moderated the influence of illness-stress on depression in a sample of 679 elderly diabetes patients. Data from the first wave(2006) of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing were used. Using moderated multiple regression, exercise as a moderator of the illness-stress and depression relation was examined. Results showed that illness-stress, regular exercise, income, social participation, everyday difficulties from illness were associated with depression. Regular exercise moderated the relationship between illness-stress and elderly diabetes patients¡¯ depression. Findings suggested a buffering effect for regular exercise against depression associated with illness-stress. Implications of the findings for practice and research are discussed.
